You often hear that saying, “Geez, that guy [or girl] should find someone they’re own age!” or variants of it, and I have to agree with it, just not in the sense you might think. Literal age difference is never the REAL problem when it comes to people dating…the problem lies with their mental age, not their physical age. Without making this the longest opening to a gallery ever, I’ll try and explain as simply as I can…if a person is 40 years old, this person has learned certain things about life and interpersonal relationships that a younger person has not learned yet (unless the younger person is extremely intelligent and can empathize with all ages--which is completely possible) so this older person’s perspective on life will be different than a younger person’s perspective…and there lies the problem with age difference romance…VIEWS of the WORLD. Younger people tend to be idealistic and hopeful, where an older person is realistic and accepting. Part of the issue is the younger person still has not created his/her own beliefs, still using the ones that were taught to them from the adults in their lives, while as the older person has usually created their own, far enough removed from the influence of the adults in from their childhood…so basically, I do not believe that age difference is a problem at all in relationships…the saying should actually say, “Geez, that guy [girl] should find someone with the same world view as them!” I could probably write pages and pages on this subject, but I hope you see MY perspective on it with this little paragraph! :)
